Cycle Campaign

National campaign – Make NZ Streets Safe for Cycling – save lives

This campaign has been launched as a result of a national survey (by Cycling Action Network in Feb) which showed that safety was a major concern.
78% of Wgtn cyclists surveyed said their biggest concern was lack of safe cycle infrastructure (68% nationally).
And 85% of Wgtn cyclists surveyed said they wanted more investment in cycling infrastructure, (78% nationally).
The online petition and survey results will be given to local council delegates at the Road Safety Summit on April 9th. But thats just the beginning – because with the extra money allocated to councils from the Transport budget the pressure will need to go on councils to actually put in safe cycle routes.
Key concerns;
* Lack of safe cycling infrastructure, drivers not prepared to share the road, and motor vehicles passing too close the biggest concerns of two thirds of respondents.
* Four out of five survey respondents wanted more national-level investment in cycling infrastructure, and over half wanted driver and cyclist education campaigns to change attitudes and behaviours.
