This Sunday’s Frocknic to Pencarrow Lighthouse!

Meet 10:10 at East West ferries for 10:30 sailing

Dearest Frockers,

Let’s welcome in the New Year with a ferry-cycle frocknic.  What’s that you say?  Well – it’s a trip on the ferry from central Wellington to Days Bay and a cycle ride through Eastbourne and along the sea to the Pencarrow lighthouse!  We’ll stop for a picnic along the way. Bring your favourite picnic outfit, your bike, some fabulous picnic buddies (might be your dog, your partner or a friend or just your bike), some picnic contributions and your togs!

Here is the cycle route from Eastbourne as shown on Map My Ride: http://www.mapmyride.com/s/routes/view/bike-ride-map/eastbourne/5236324.  We will start from Days Bay which is about 3 kms further.  We’ll take our time and enjoy the wonderful views across the harbour!

Meet at East West Ferries at 10:10 to give us time to buy tickets and load our bikes for a 10:30 sailing.  The East West Ferries ticket office is situated in the Meridian building on the waterfront on the water side.  It’s right beside Wagamama’s restaurant.  We will arrive at Days bay at 11:10.  We will ride south from Days Bay through Eastbourne to the end of the road.  Then the road is unsealed but flat and forgiving out to the lighthouse.  We will find a picnic spot along the way and perhaps go for a swim!  There are a few return ferries to catch.  We’ll aim for the one at 3:20, but there are also ferries at 4.15 and 5:30.

It is supposed to be a nice warm day with a northerly breeze – but if the weather does not cooperate please RSVP with a number we can text you on to defer the frocknic.  Please send a reply with the word 2012 Frocknic, your name, number of attendees and a contact mobile number all in the subject line.

Having a frocktastic week – see you there!

  1. Well it was the toughest flat ride I’ve ever done.
First we took a ferry ride across the harbour. We were tossed like a salad.
After that no-one was keen for the return voyage so we elected to trim our ride to the lighthouse and picnic by the track. After a stop at Days Bay for ice cream, coffee, trying out bikes and an Abbey Road shot (http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s320x320/395971_10150587964616672_94377691671_10705632_1725366996_n.jpg) we pedalled around the Great Harbour Way route along the east harbour bays, Petone and back down SH2.
Boy did we earn that beer.
Highlights: sunshine, quiet gravel track south of Eastbourne, trying out other bikes, picnic, tailwinds.
