Clever cycle infrastructure placement makes the road safer for drivers

This is surely one for the smugness files. When cars in New York kept crashing because parked cars meant they couldn’t see around the corner, NYC’s Department of Transport came up with a clever use of the site that provided visibility AND extra parking… for bikes!

      I’d like to see one of these per block along the Golden Mile. For the rest of the CBD I’d like to see these spaced so everywhere within CBD is within a few hundred meters of one.

      Best locations would be at unsignaled intersections where lines of sight would be improved, like the intersection featured in the video. I’m sure NZTA has stats that cover this.

      But if there aren’t a lot of “best” places for these, almost anyplace would be “good”. Of course places with good lighting, lots of pedestrian traffic and close to shops would be best, for usability and security. Also, let’s not put them directly over storm-water drains; those things eat keys.
