Friday fun film: A Day Out

Carlton Reid is writing a blog to accompany his online publication,  ‘Roads Were Not Built for Cars’. It includes fascinating items on the history of pedal power such as  ‘A Day Out’, Alan Bennett’s first televised play shown in 1972. Carlton describes the film, set in 1911 and depicting a club ride from Halifax to Bolton Abbey, as a “wonderfully evocative” classic but disputes its accuracy. He says: “I most especially object to the mixing of classes and the wearing of Cyclists’ Touring Club uniforms.” He adds: “It’s highly unlikely that cycling club members in 1911 would be wearing CTC uniforms.”
