You might be right about the age, Simon. This is the closest head badge I can find. The heron’s feathers have a distinctively hand-drawn look about them which I haven’t seen on badges from other decades http://www.velobase.com/ViewBrand.aspx?Brand=Raleigh&BrandID=e71b2612-32a3-428c-8928-f69dafcd853c&From=H LikeLike June 9, 2011 at 1:42 pm Reply
Or maybe not. Sheldon Brown’s vintage Raleigh catalogues don’t show any loop frames in the 1951 and 1958 editions. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/ Possibly 1940s? The Popular model has very similar features http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/Retro-Raleighs/47_maybe–'Post-War‘.pdf The Sturmey-Archer 3-speed is 1966, but it looks much newer than the rest of the bike. A venerable Raleigh – nice. You’ve got to love the late, great, Sheldon Brown. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/raleigh.html Is there a serial number visible? LikeLike June 9, 2011 at 11:00 pm Reply
BA 4696. Which doesn’t seem to conform to any of the (highly varied) numbering systems used by Raleigh. Curiouser and curiouser. LikeLike June 11, 2011 at 12:54 pm Reply
Hmm. Possibly 1951 according to Convention #2 http://www.jaysmarine.com/TH_raleigh_serials.html#47. But there weren’t any loop-frames in the 1951 catalogue… LikeLike June 11, 2011 at 1:08 pm Reply
I wonder…which 1951 catalogue? Could be that there was more that one catalogue worldwide. Or the catalogues might not have fitted perfectly into the calendar year (like the 2012 Giant Expressways arrived in the country last week). LikeLike June 11, 2011 at 5:26 pm
