Mountain biking weekend trip

Serac Ski Club is running a weekend trip based at their lodge in Ohakune, and there’s room for a few guests. You can do whatever you want, relax, walk, DIY easy bike trails, or you can join their Bridge to Nowhere expedition. There’s also tennis, golf and fishing available.

Ohakune Old Coach Road, Sat or Sun 9-10

DoC and Tongariro Natural History Society (as partners) have restored the awesome Hapuawhenua Viaduct 1907. It’s a 2.5 hour walk return (6.4km), or a great mountain bike ride suitable for all (Grade 2). The bike ride can be extended to a longer loop.  Laze around eating cake at a café in town afterwards.

MTN Bike the “Bridge-to-Nowhere / Mangapurua Track” on Sat 9 April

If you only have one chance to do an adventure ride this year, this is the North Island’s best (Grade 3+). A classic ride taking in the Bridge and a jet-boat trip down the Whanganui River. The track is part of the Mtn-to-Sea Cycle Trail.  It has been upgraded by DoC. There are 38km and 55km options for the ride which takes 5-7 hours. There’s plenty of up and down so a good level of bike fitness is required.  Around $125 for round-trip transport, including jet boat & Shuttle. http://www.bridgetonowhere.co.nz/mangapurua_trail.html

The per-night cost looks extremely reasonable – $23 per night and that includes breakfasts plus dinner on Saturday.

Book by emailing Mike Cook admin@serac.org.nz by 8pm Monday the 4th of April. If you want to do the Bridge to Nowhere expedition, let Mike know when you book.
