Bike racks on buses: the slideshow

Jonathan Slason, Senior Transportation Engineer at BECA, has been doing quite a bit of work around bike racks on buses and has generously offered to share some of his professional knowledge and experience with us. Along with a slideshow (below) presented at Auckland Council recently, he’s put together the following notes for us. We’ll be bringing you more of Jason’s work shortly.

It is important to roll out a well organised, planned, and integrated Bike on Bus programme.

What might happen if we supply only a partial system?
–       Will not provide the public with the education to use the system
–       Will not provide the public with enough understanding of the rack system
–       May not efficiently use the infrastructure supplied
–       Lack of trust if buses show up without bike racks
–       Ultimately, we won’t get the uptake that has been forecasted based on the international research and literature reviews.

The partnerships are critical to getting a successful system off the ground. A system can leverage the connections with cycling, park and rides, and public transport. Examples include bicycle sharing on either end of the trip, bicycle storage organisations (i.e. the former Bicycle Central cycle café in Hamilton).

NZ can benefit by adopting the best practice from the established Bike on Bus systems from around the world. Best practice can be established for each of the steps outlined below:
–       Identify key stakeholders and project champions
–       Plan for the system
–       Identify demand and size of roll out
–       Procure system
–       Motivate, Educate, and Excite the public
–       Training, PR, Marketing,
–       Release
–       Monitor, Evaluate, Respond, React

The benefits of the service can increase the overall catchment of public transport by expanding the reach of the system by accommodating bicycles.  The NZ NZTA Economic Evaluation Manual provides an assessment of the benefits to NZ by shifting a number of car-drivers to cycling and public transport modes. It is clear that the system would have robust Benefit to Cost ratios for a Bike on Bus system.
The time for trials is over – each city should implement a Bike on Bus system.
